The Danes and their Nordic neighbours place much emphasis on the home, not just because their long, harsh winters dictate that they spend a lot of their time here, but also because the home – in a hygge sense – truly is where the heart is. It is in the home that we can truly be ourselves and enjoy the company of those we love and who love us in return.
In The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking writes, “Hygge is trying to build in elements of simple pleasures, relaxation, comfort, gratitude and togetherness on a daily basis.” And this then is what you need to think of when creating a hygge home.
When you walk through the door, do you feel instant pleasure and gratitude that this place is your home?
Does it represent who you are and what makes you happy?
These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself before you start turfing out your old sofa and sprucing up your place with sleek Scandinavian design. In other words, to bring hygge into your home you need to start with how your home currently makes you feel and how you want it to make you feel.
The true spirit of a hygge home is how comfortable, safe, happy, grounded and grateful those you regularly spend time in it are.
Design and décor bring together two important elements of a hygge home – all that is useful and allows your home to function well (design), and that which is beautiful and prompts feelings of pleasure, comfort, and connection (décor.)
To make your house welcoming and pleasant, you need to be able to move through its spaces with ease and freedom. You also want to feel safe and sure in each room.
In other words, when in your bedroom, you want to feel that this is the place that you come to relax and sleep. When you walk into the kitchen, you should be aware that this is where you prepare and cook meals, and, possibly where people gather to meet and eat.
Design is about understanding how space needs to be used and the way that you, as an individual best use it. How you design it – the furnishings, decorations, colours, and textures you include – helps in maintaining a harmonious use of that room, making it a pleasure to be in as well as promoting a genuine will to use it.
